Society Pro Arte - Popular Theatre in Vancouver, BC
invites to a play by Franciszek Zablocki, Zolta Szlafmyca
albo Koleda na Nowy Rok (in Polish). This 1785 comedy by
the best Polish comedy playwright of the era has been directed
by a TV and theatre director from Poland, Julia Wernio. Music
written for the play by Piotr Salaber.
Hon.
Krzysztof Czapla, Consul General of the Republic of Poland in
Vancouver, BC, will be present at the performance.

Ms. Malgorzata Walewska, a stunning Polish mezzo-soprano, returns to the
Seattle Opera after her very well received performances in Bluebeard Castle
and in Il Trovatore in 2009 & 2010,
respectively. In Don
Quixote
by Jules Messenet she portrays Dulcinea,
the lady loved by the hero.
Ms. Walewska performed major roles in Europe and the USA; she debuted
at the
Metropolitan Opera in 2005.

The book for the meeting is
Smierc czeskiego psa by Janusz Rudnicki published by WAB in 2009.
Rudnicki, 54, is a contemporary writer hailing from Silesia and
living in Hamburg. The book is a set of short stories that are
vintage Rudnicki: provocative, shameless and grotesque, sometimes
nostalgic. Club meetings are in Polish.

Polish Cooking classes. This lesson covers Polish pickle soup,

Northwest Film Forum in Seattle presents an Oscar nominated
movie Rabbit a la Berlin (50' min),
a creative docudrama telling the story of no-man's land along
the Berlin wall
from a rabbit perspective. For 28 years that deadly strip of
territory was a haven to the furry creatures. This German/Polish
film was directed by Bartek Konopka and Piotr Rosolowski in
2009. Shown with a short documentary When Herons Dream
(11 min. 2009) about Pacific NW blue herons by local director
Serge Gregory.

Wednesday, teaching
the old art of
Polish paper cutting. Learn about this beautiful art
form along with tips and techniques to complete your own wycinanki
projects. Materials are included and cutting tools will be
available during the class. Gather some friends for an evening
of fun - bring your creativity, passion and
patience!

Polish FIlm Club invites to a screening of The Silent Touch
(1992) by the great Krzysztof Zanussi. The movie is an
English language film co-written by Peter Morgan and starring
Max von Sydow as an aging musical composer with a writer block,
inspired by a young musicologist to a new work and to a new love
with a young woman. This highly melodramatic film explorers
themes of art, genius, obnoxious personality, infidelity and
creativity.

features the winners of the 2011 NW Chopin Festival. As usual, the
best young artists from our state are expected to deliver great
performances of Chopin music. This year concert includes the best

Ms. Lana Dziekonski,
viola, has won
the 2011 St. James Young Artist Award and will play Andante
and Hungarian Rondo by von Weber at the Cathedral Youth
Music Festival. Lana, 15, a freshman at University Prep, comes
from a family of notable musicians: violinist father Tom
and cellist mother Virginia. The concert also features leading
youth choirs including ones from St. Mark's
Cathedral and St. James Cathedral.

The Chopin Foundation presents its
annual Chopin Festival, this year attracting nearly 150 piano
students from across our state. The Competition runs from 8:30
am to 5:30 pm. Limited seating will be available due to the
large number of participants, divided into categories.
New this year is a Concerto Division The prize winner concert is
on Feb 6, 2011, see a separate note.
